Indian Army Boosts Community-Led Adventure Tourism in North Sikkim’s Yumthang Valley

North Sikkim : The Indian Army has extended significant support to the local community of Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim by providing specialised high-altitude adventure equipment, strengthening grassroots tourism initiatives in one of the region’s most picturesque destinations.

The equipment includes camping gear, climbing essentials, safety kits, cooking sets and high-altitude support equipment, enabling the community to offer well-structured adventure experiences. With this boost, villagers are now equipped to manage daily tourist footfall of 20–25 visitors, opening avenues for guided trekking, camping and adventure-based activities in a safe and organised environment.

Mr. Pema Dorjee, Pipon of Lachung Dzumsa, who is leading the community project, expressed gratitude for the Army’s support.

He said, “This support allows our youth to organise adventure activities in a structured way and welcome more visitors with confidence. It strengthens our ability to manage tourism responsibly and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.”

Army officials highlighted that the initiative is aimed at improving local capability, encouraging responsible tourism, and supporting economic development in North Sikkim’s high-altitude belt. The effort is aligned with the Indian Army’s broader outreach programmes, including the Ranbhoomi Darshan initiative, which promotes border-area tourism and deepens civil-military cooperation across the region.

This collaboration marks yet another milestone in the Army’s commitment to community upliftment, tourism development, and strengthening India’s northern frontier villages.
